SUPPORT SUSTAINABILITY WITH YOUR CREATIVITY

SustainaDAO Digital Art Hackathon

Global sustainability is a life-time goal what requires collective efforts from us and our children. Partnering with SIIP-UN, DECIL is hosting a digital art hackathon under the theme of sustainability. This virtual hackathon primarily faces students under age 25 and welcomes digital art creators and hobbyists around the world. It is our wish that this Hackathon will generate social and environmental impact that facilitates our global community building and bridges sustainable development goals with blockchain technology and metaverse.

This Hackathon is part of the 2022 Annual SIIS conference, during which winning artwork will be minted as NFTs and showcased to millions of conference attendees. Participants under age 25 have an opportunity to join Youth Ambassador Programof United Nations that will be trained by world leaders from the UN systems.  The SDG Youth Ambassador Program is a comprehensive program, where online seminars, panels, fireside chats and workshops will be held on a weekly-basis. It is hoped that through this program, it can increase the youth participation in sustainable issues through education. The Youth Ambassador Program is open to high school / college students or young entrepreneurs (12-25).

Main Organizer of the Hackathon:  DECIL is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to advancing blockchain technology, facilitating collaboration needed for technology adoption, and building a more sustainable ecosystem to bridge the gap between crypto communities and mainstream. At DECIL, we believe that some of the most pressing challenges of our society, such as sustainability, can be better addressed with a decentralized collective effort that ensure the transparency, longevity, and interoperability.

Tokens and NFTs have to be kept in a digital wallet. If you don’t already have a digital wallet, you can get one by downloading a Math Wallet. You can learn more with this guide and these video tutorials.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital assets representing things such as art, music, and in-game items. If you’d like to learn more, please take a look at our partner Math wallet’s NFT guide.
Since most NFTs are currently traded on the Ethereum network which requires a proof-of-work system. This means that each trade and transaction is confirmed by a mining process. Some people are concerned about the energy used in mining because they believe it contributes to carbon emissions if non-clean energy sources are used. While there is cause for concern, we plan to make our hackathon more environmentally friendly and sustainable in the following ways:
  • 1. For the majority of our NFTs, we will use a proof-of-stake system. A proof-of-stake system validates block transactions based on the number of coins staked by the validator, reducing the amount of problem-solving done in a proof-of-work system such as Ethereum and thus significantly reducing the energy required.
  • 2. To further reduce energy consumption, we will use batch transactions whenever possible.
  • 3. In comparison to traditional art forms, digital art is already more environmentally friendly.
